"WOW!  That is the best comment I can say about my cataract surgery.  I've been wearing glasses since I was in the fifth grade and contacts for over fifty years.  I thought I could see quite well with my glasses or contacts and didn't realize how my vision had deteriorated over the last few years.  The preparation was the most difficult part as I had to use soft contacts one week for each five year period I had worn hard contacts then glasses for a week prior to surgery, something I had not done for years.

I had my first surgery on my right eye August 2, 2018 and walked out of the surgery center and was able to see very well without a corrective lens in my right eye, I was able to wear a contact in my left eye.  When I got home and looked in our back yard, I was amazed at the contrast between each eye; the colors were so much brighter, especially white, with my right eye and everything else had sort of a yellow hue with my left eye.  My enthusiasm to have the surgery on my left eye was at a new high.

My second surgery for my left eye was on August 16, 2018 again all went well and my vision was beyond amazing.  The clouds are now an amazing white, the sky is such a bright blue and everything is so much clearer than with my contacts or glasses.

"My optometrist told me in 2015 that I had cataracts in both eyes and that there was nothing more that he could do to correct my vision. I asked him for suggestions for an ophthalmologist, and one of his recommendations was Dr. Ryan Boland. At least one person from our church group had cataract surgery done by him and was well pleased. I had been to the Georgia Eye Institute where the cataract diagnosis was confirmed, but decided to check Dr. Boland out. Never having been to the Boland Eye Center before, I was pleasantly surprised at how well everything was organized. There was no waiting; people were there when they were supposed to be. Moreover, his staff was highly competent and thorough, checking and rechecking their measurements on my eyes. Dr. Boland himself worked under Dr. Stephen Lichtenstein at the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia who pioneered many of the cataract surgery techniques and who had dealt with my wife's cataracts forty years earlier. Dr. Boland had also had cataract surgery himself in the recent past, so I felt that he would certainly understand what his patients were undergoing. I had one ordinary lens replaced in my right eye on May 28th and a Toric lens in the left on June 2nd to correct astigmatism. Of the alternatives given to me, I chose the computer driven laser. The operations were quick- I was in and out about two to three hours- and painless. The improvement in my distance vision was immediately noticeable. White walls and lights are now white- not brown. There are no more halos around traffic lights and I can read road signs from a great distance, better, I think than I could when I was young. I can finally see what high-definition television is really all about. I still need reading glasses, but now the sharpness and clarity allows me to take full advantage of the Retina screens on my Apple computer and iPhone. All in all, I feel that I have received a miracle. I can't think of a surgical procedure with such a high benefit to cost and I can't recommend Dr. Boland more highly." - Nelson L.

 

"The surgeries went as described ahead of time. There was very little discomfort during the procedure. To add some humor and curiosity there were some strange sensations like bubble wrap being pressed against my eye socket. With one eye there were some after surgery surprises apparently not associated with the surgery itself, but with the dryness of my eyes.The unknown associated with that period were rather disconcerting, but Dr. Boland guided me through all of the "extras" to a happy outcome. My revised vision is such a blessing! "I've worn contacts for 23 years- one for closeup and one for distance. When Dr. Boland told me that I had significant cataracts, he told me about the laser surgery and toric lenses. I would not need contacts or eyeglasses anymore. I decided to go with this using the Catalys Precision Laser System. I'm 80 years old and now have 20/20 vision. I couldn't be happier. My experience with the surgery was great. It took about 30 minutes and except for resting the first 24 hours, there were no restrictions. "By November I was ready to have cataract surgery. I chose to have the left eye done in November and the right eye in December. Both procedures were done at the St. Joseph's Hospital Outpatient Surgery Center. Both procedures went well and the care I received was excellent. Downtime was minimal, the day of surgery only. "From the first appointment I was treated with care and respect. The surgical coordinator educated me as to what I could expect and took great care to answer all of my questions. She acted like I was the only paient she had that day, not rushing through the interview. On the day of the surgery I was greeted by a cheerful, professional staff at the Eye Surgery Center. The anesthesiologist came by and explained that while I would not be completely out I would be relaxed. I chose the Catalys Laser surgery. "My eye sight was 20/400 plus reading glasses; I wore typical bifocals for decades.  Cataracts steadily blurred my vision until night driving was too risky.  I am a retired engineer, with significant time at the computer.  My hobbies are tennis, I play an aggressive game, and photography, since the days of plate film!  I had two decisions to make: manual or laser cataract removal; and IOL type.

I surveyed several friends regarding their method of cataract removal.  I found no difference in response whether it was manual or laser, all were happy with the results.  I chose laser purely on principal: I trust technology and I trusted my ophthalmologist, Dr. Ryan Boland.

I chose to insert IOL's in addition to the cataract removal.  The critical question was which type.  Internet searches gave me many testimonials and manufacturer proclamations.  I queried friends.  I found almost everyone happy with what they had chosen, being they single focal point, mixed focal point or multifocal lenses.  Each solution was right for their lifestyle and needs.  I realized that none could give me a direct comparison by the basic nature of the technology.

Based on the advice of my ophthalmologist Dr. Boland, and my general trust in technology, I decided on the multifocal IOL's, specifically Tecnis Symfony.  I chose to have my best vision at a distance, expecting to need reading glasses.  After the left lens placement, I wore a contact lens in the right eye during the interim.

The procedures were extremely fast and efficient: preparation with the nurses and anesthesiologist; the cataract removal by laser; a brief rest; then insertion of the IOL.  I was under a mild sedative during both procedures, just enough to take the edge off.  The staff of nurses, technicians and ophthalmologist were very professional and caring.  I started early morning and was home by noon.  There was no follow-up pain or discomfort.  The first time you look through your "new eyes" is a life memorable event!

As my left eye cleared following the procedure, I was awestruck by the distance clarity! I could distinguish individual leaves a hundred yards away.  Equally beneficial was the steady improvement in my reading ability; I still need reading glasses inside, but realized that outside, in brighter light, I was almost able to read without glasses; this improved daily!

For my right eye, I chose to have the exact same vision; I rejected the option of moving the focal point in closer to cover reading without glasses.  I was concerned it would be a hindrance to playing tennis.  My right eye IOL gave me the same extremely clear vision I had experienced in my left.  Even better, with both eyes now equipped with matching IOL's, my reading ability steadily continued to improve.  I am typing this on my laptop on my sunny back porch WITHOUT reading glasses!  To be clear, with low light, e.g. restaurants, I still need reading glasses.

My vision playing tennis is exceptional; I'm seeing the tennis ball with clarity not experienced since a child.  Focus is quick and precise. If I do not wear sunglasses, the focus is clear all the way into a close net shot.  Even with sunglasses, it's pretty good!

For photography, because I use DSLR's, I have adjusted the viewfinder optic to its maximum to give me a clear display.  Reading the data on the back of the camera is a challenge: OK in bright light, glasses needed in dim.  Through the lens viewing and composing is clear.  With the camera eye cup up to my eye without glasses is a joy.

I was told to expect better color without the cataracts, but I wasn't expecting how much actually occurred.  My cataracts were not the "worst", so others will experience this even greater than I.  The color shift was to a blue, a cooler color spectrum.  The morning sun is so blue!  My gray shirts were really blue!  Vegetation is less green as more blue shows in the leaves.  This is a once in a lifetime experience, because now that I am a few months since their removal, my color world has normalized to reality.

Am I glad I did this?  YES!

Would I choose Tecnis Symfony again?  YES!" - George S.
